    About Colin Hurtt

Since 2005, Colin Hurtt has dedicated himself to the piano as a means of musical expression. With over two decades of experience, Colin has studied under several accomplished teachers, refining his skills in classical, jazz, and contemporary music. His training has shaped a versatile and intuitive approach to the piano, allowing him to blend technical precision with creative freedom. In addition to piano, Colin is also proficient in percussion and guitar, broadening his understanding of rhythm and harmony.

As a passionate piano teacher, Colin takes a personalized and student-centered approach to instruction. He teaches students of all ages and skill levels, from young beginners to advanced players, recognizing that each student learns differently. Colin emphasizes improvisation and ear training alongside traditional music reading, encouraging students to explore their creative instincts while building a strong technical foundation. He believes in creating a supportive and encouraging environment where students feel comfortable experimenting and making mistakes, knowing that growth comes through exploration.

Colin tailors each lesson to align with the student’s personal goals—whether that’s mastering a complex classical piece, learning jazz standards, or composing original music. He integrates theory, technique, and emotional expression into every lesson, helping students not only to play music but to understand and feel it. His ultimate goal is to equip students with the skills and confidence to become independent musicians capable of learning and improving on their own.

Colin’s teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that music is both a technical craft and an emotional outlet. He encourages students to see music as a language for self-expression and connection. He often challenges students to improvise, transpose, and explore different styles to develop adaptability and deepen their musical understanding.

Beyond music, Colin finds inspiration in digital art and his academic pursuits. He is currently pursuing a degree in Management Information Systems, balancing his analytical mindset with his artistic sensibilities. His wife’s Nicaraguan heritage has also influenced his musical tastes, introducing him to Latin rhythms and styles that have enriched his playing and teaching.
