Teacher Profile: Alex Szasz

About Alex Szasz

Alex Szasz is a Trumpeter with the Air Force Ceremonial Brass, as well as a Music Educator based in the Northern VA area. He works with Trumpet, High Brass, and Piano students. Originally from Romania, Alex's Air Force career started in 2017 as a member of the United States Air Force Academy Band, Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado. During his stay in Colorado, Alex also maintained a studio of private students and has continued his teaching in the D.C. area since his assignment.

Mr. Szasz started his Trumpet studies under the direction of John McElroy, former principal trumpet of the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. In 2015, he completed his undergraduate studies in trumpet performance from McGill University in Canada, where he studied with Andrew Dunn and Russell DeVuyst. In 2017, he completed his Master’s degree in Trumpet Performance at DePaul University in Chicago under the guidance of professors Bill Denton, Matthew Comerford, Matthew Lee and Tage Larsen. While earning his degrees, Alex also received training additional musical areas, which include include extensive Theory and Aural training, Piano studies, and performance experience within the Solo, Chamber, and Large Ensemble settings.

Over the years, Mr. Szasz has received numerous awards and honors such as the Merit Scholarship at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, the Outstanding Brass Scholarship at McGill University, and a fellowship at the Atlantic Music Festival. He has played several summers as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral player with the Sibiu Philharmonic Orchestra in Romania, at the Romanian-American Summer Festival.

In his free time, Alex likes to play chess, basketball, and enjoys exploring nature and the outdoors.
